Joe (Jonathan Ashmore) lives in a bustling area of London's East End with his mother Joanne (Celia Johnson), above a tailor shop run by the kindly Mr Kandinsky (David Kossoff). As Kandinsky regales Joe with folk tales about mythology, he shares that a captured unicorn has the ability to grant any wish. When Joe is wandering the streets and comes across a little goat with only one horn, he believes it to be a unicorn and purchases it from the vendor. Meanwhile, one of Mr Kandinsky's employees, Sam (Joe Robinson), takes up wrestling in order to earn extra money to help him buy a ring for his girlfriend Sonia (Diana Dors). Will Joe and his special kid help everyone to achieve their dreams?
